Meeting immediate needs.
Opening future possibilities.

Out of Survival Mode Inc. is a nonprofit organization rooted in the belief that everyone deserves access to life's essentials—and the opportunity to thrive.

Our mission brings together food, shelter, clothing, resource navigation, and community support. We help people make sense of available options, identify their next steps, and move toward greater stability and independence.

03 / HEALING MINDS AND LIVES

Mental health.
Substance use.
Human connection.

Compassionate support starts with listening.

Healing Minds and Lives focuses on mental health literacy, reducing stigma, supportive mentoring, and connections to community treatment and recovery resources. This includes helping people affected by opioid or stimulant use find appropriate support and understand their options.

  • Understanding available support and referral options
  • Connecting with qualified mental health and substance use providers
  • Identifying transportation, benefits, and other practical barriers to care
  • Following up, with permission, on whether a referral led to a connection
  • Encouraging connection, dignity, and recovery
  • Listening to community feedback to improve access to support

Our volunteer navigator tools support training records, referral follow-up, and private activity summaries. We respect each participant’s choices and do not ask people to stop prescribed treatment to receive navigation support.

OSM's role is community support and resource navigation. Clinical assessment, counseling, medication management, and treatment are provided by appropriately qualified professionals.

COMMUNITY-LED CONNECTION

More than a referral.
A plan to follow through.

We are developing a community navigation approach for individuals and families in Kent and Sussex counties, including rural communities where finding and reaching support can be difficult.

Listen without judgment

Start with the person's priorities, strengths, and preferences. Respect their choices and permission to coordinate support.

Connect to appropriate resources

Explore mental health, opioid and stimulant use, treatment, and recovery resources with qualified community providers. Identify practical access barriers along the way.

Follow the next step

Plan a follow-up to learn whether the connection happened and what remains unresolved, rather than assuming a referral completed the work.

Learn from the work

Our staff workspace supports tracking contacts, referrals, reported connections, and follow-up tasks. These records help us improve navigation; they do not represent clinical treatment outcomes.

COMMUNITY ACTION / VOLUNTEER WITH OSM

Small acts.
Cleaner communities.

Help care for the places we call home.

OSM is organizing community volunteer opportunities focused on neighborhood cleanup and picking up trash. Bring your willingness to help, connect with neighbors, and contribute to a cleaner shared environment.

OUR STARTING POINT

Neighborhood trash pickup

Our initial focus is collecting litter and picking up trash in community spaces.

Volunteer as a navigator

Volunteers can also serve as community navigators, helping people explore resources and follow through on next steps. Navigator access is approved by OSM and limited to assigned work.

Recommended volunteer training

OSM recommends naloxone (Narcan) and opioid overdose response training for volunteers and navigators. Naloxone is a medication that can reverse an opioid overdose. Learn to recognize an overdose and respond through training offered by outside providers.

Training is provided by external organizations. OSM recommends these resources and does not deliver or certify the courses.

Get involved

Individuals and community groups can contact OSM to express interest in navigation, volunteering, or helping organize a cleanup.

Planning together

Cleanup activities are in the planning stage. Contact us for updates on locations, dates, supplies, and participation requirements.
